Our Courses
We offer two courses that follow similar structures but run during different times. Check out our course pages for more information about course dates, field study dates, etc.
ITE 403C Japan/KoreaWith three cities to choose from, many unique experiences to be shared, and an endless amount of things to do on your free time, our Japan/Korea course is a good match for those who want to experience what East Asia has to offer.

ITE 403C SwitzerlandWith a focus on education for sustainable development combined with and exploration of UNESCO's 17 Sustainable Development Goals, our Switzerland course is a good match for those passionate about sustainable living.

A Three Phase Course Structure
Inquire, Travel, Examine
Our travel courses have between 8-9 UH Manoa based course sessions followed by a field study abroad
PHASE I - Pre-Field PreparationInquire
Students will learn about the culture, history, and educational system of their host countries, and develop a topic of inquiry. Students will also work together with their classmates to prepare a mini-lesson that will be taught in classrooms in their host countries.

PHASE II - Field StudyTravel
Students will actively participate in on-site meetings, school/classroom visits, observations, inquiry, reflection, discussion, collaboration with partner university students/faculty, teaching lesson(s) in classroom(s), and visits to culture sites.

PHASE III - Post-Field AnalysisExamine
Students will analyze, synthesize, and apply all their various experiences, notes, findings, etc. into a final presentation that highlights their experiences and how they plan to apply their newly acquired insights/skills.

A Course for Everyone
With our travel courses, you can experience your best you in Hawaii and abroad. No foreign language experience necessary. You'll learn methods of developing inquiry and effective field note taking to help prepare you for your field study abroad.
Undergraduate StudentsAll majors are welcome! This course can be applied towards the Education Minor Core Course requirement.
Graduate StudentsThis course may be applied as an elective towards your graduate degree program (please meet with your department/adviser for approval of this course).

TeachersCourse sessions can be attended online. You may be able to earn PD credits (with prior approval from your principal).
Former Course ParticipantsOur record setting student took our Japan course three years in a row, graduated soon after with a teaching degree, and went abroad to teach in Japan!

Rooted in Inquiry, Based in the Field
Inquiry is the process of wanting to learn more about something by forming and answering your own questions regarding your own topic of interest. Through either of our inquiry-based courses, we will teach you
A field-study, in many academic and professional disciplines, is when someone goes to a specific location for a specified period of time (days, weeks, months, etc) to observe and participate in the field with the goal of collecting data for their own research. |
ITE 403C Japan/KoreaYou will develop an inquiry related to some aspect of Japanese/Korean education, culture, history, etc., rooted in your own personal interests (i.e., pop culture, classroom management, etc.)
ITE 403C SwitzerlandYou will develop an inquiry based on education for sustainable development combined with an integration and exploration of UNESCO's 17 Sustainable Development Goals
