Free Time Built InYour field study days will be long but full of adventures and discoveries. Field days can start as early as 8:00 am and end as late as 8:00 pm (this is typically for partner-university held banquets welcoming us). However, a typical field day will be from 9a - 4p, leaving with you time in the evening to debrief, refresh, and head out to enjoy the evening. There will be opportunities to meet students and faculty from our partner universities, giving you a chance to network and enjoy the city with someone who knows the area. We also highly encourage students to travel together and enjoy time before and after their field study weeks. There is a lot out there to explore in Japan and Korea! |
Course DatesPhase I - Course Sessions students will attend course sessions held at the UH Manoa campus (live online attendance can be made possible for those who live on neighbor islands). Course sessions are held over nine (9) days spread out from April through May. Phase II - Field Study students can select from seven (7) different field study options between three (3) cities for their field study component. The first field study week (in Kyoto) takes place a little over one week after the final course session date. Phase III - Final Project students will usually have several weeks after the conclusion of the final field study week (in Seoul) to complete their final project. Update your Calendar Review our Course Overview Document for the most up-to-date information on our course dates, field study dates, due date for the final project, and more. |
Cost EstimatesWe know that finances are likely the biggest obstacle to prospective students of this course. If thinking of this course as a once in a lifetime experience, think of the money spent as an investment in your own future as an educator and citizen of the world. With this course, you can have experiences that would be hard to find anywhere else, and share in those experiences with people from all walks of life, both in Hawaii and abroad. They say that traveling abroad is one of the best personal investments someone can make for their own personal growth, and that is something we firmly believe in. Below are cost estimates for each of the major expenses you will have for your travel investment. We will set aside time in several course sessions to work together on travel logistics and best practices to help you make the cheapest and most efficient travel routes possible. |
Airfare
Air Asia X has been operating from Honolulu since Summer 2017 and has brought lower than average prices for round trip airfare to Japan. Of course, airfares fluctuate between days and weeks. Depending on your plans, doing a multi-city trip may save you a little money!
|
GroundGround transportation includes costs on your own (such as taxis, train, subway, etc.). Note that on some days during the field study, you may be traveling with the whole group via subway, etc., as part of the day's itinerary; these small costs are also factored into these estimates.
|
LodgingDuring the field-study, all students must stay together at the same hotel in a central location that helps our partners facilitate our weekly agendas. Our hotels are generally in amazing locations for shopping and dining. |
|
Food, Insurance, IncidentalsYou have to eat while you are abroad too! And you probably want to buy other things as well. Note that we will have a few "on-the-house" meals courtesy of our friends and partners in Japan/Korea! We also work together with an on campus organization to provide you with more affordable travel insurance (built into the cost estimates below).

Cost Estimate Total
These prices are comparable or cheaper than what you may end up spending on your own for a vacation. With our course, you will have unique opportunities like classroom visits that you would not be able to have on your own. Review our ITE 403 Course Overview Document to see how these costs break down over our (7) different field study options for Japan and/or Korea. |
